Introduction to the Bible

Participants will learn to unpack the fascinating “library” of our salvation history called the Bible. We will look at how the books of the Bible were chosen and considered sacred literature, the history of biblical translations and how to choose a Bible, and draw comparisons and contrasts with the four Gospels.

On request, this session can include the opportunity for catechists and lay preachers to apply this learning about the Bible to their ministires of catechetics and preaching. This workshop is designed for those already involved in Bible study, Small Chris tian Community prayer groups, and all those with a general interest who need some help getting more familiar with the Bible.

Length of Workshop: one day (6 ½ hours)

Presenter: Marie-Louise Ternier-Gommers

The Bible – Going Deeper

For those who have taken the Introductory workshop on the Bible and wish to deepen their knowledge of Scripture, workshops are being developed on more specific aspects of the Bible, i.e. exploring certain books of the Bible or looking at various themes in the Bible. Various presenters will take participants through hands-on learning and group discussions.

Length: One evening or one day

Small Christian Communities – 1
Introductory Workshop

Exploring the rationale for parish-based Small Chris tian Communities (SCC), this development will be placed in a historical Church context, while also considering what the Church says today about SCC. With the help of video-based material, group interaction and an SCC experience, greater insight will be achieved on the characteristics of SCC’s and the differences between a parish committee and a SCC. This workshop is designed for all parishioners interested in new ways of spiritual nourishment, wishing to grow in their relationship to God using Scripture, and growing a community spirit in the parish.

A one-evening workshop (2 ½ hours)

$5.00 per person

Presenter: Marie-Louise Ternier-Gommers

Christian Communities – 2
Group Facilitation

Healthy development of a Small Chris tian Community requires good leadership and group facilitation. With the help of video-based materials, hands-on exercises and Scripture, and group discussions, the do’s and don’ts of facilitation will be explored. The importance and role of ground rules, rotating leadership, how to identify and deal with issues and problems with group members, and learning the difference between faith sharing and group therapy will also be looked at. Group facilitation does not have to be an intimidating task for a select few, but can serve as a basis for shared leadership which deepens the bonds of community.

A one-evening workshop (2 ½ hours)

$5.00 per person

Presenter: Marie-Louise Ternier-Gommers

Christian Communities – 3
Evangelization and Outreach

How does one move from one small SCC in the parish to infusing the spirit of Small Chris tian Communities into all aspects of parish life, including pastoral care, catechetics, music and liturgy, CWL and KoC, etc.? This question will fuel the vision of using the SCC concept as a tool for evangelization and outreach, both within the parish as well as outside the parish. At the hand of video-based material, praying with Scripture, hands-on exercises, and group sharing we will explore what it takes to incorporate the SCC vision as a way of life for parishioners in their individual lives as well as their functioning as a community of faith.

A one-evening workshop (2 ½ hours)

$5.00 per person

Presenter: Marie-Louise Ternier-Gommers
